Unique and truly special
I've long been a fan of Nikka's Coffey Grain Whisky, which is not a malt and has nothing to do with coffee, but which is one of my favorite Japanese whiskies and one I regularly recommend to both beginners and veterans. The Nikka Coffey Malt shares with the Coffey Grain the feature of having been distilled in the vertical, straight-up, continuous still known (for its creator) as the Coffey still, and it does make both of these Nikka products distinctive from other Japanese whiskies. The Malt is fuller bodied than the Grain, as one would expect of a full barley whisky as opposed to a mixed-grain drink. The Malt is more comparable to Scotch whiskies, the Grain more comparable to Irish, but both are standards on my shelf. While I have a slight preference for the Grain as a flavor adventure, both are superb examples of the Japanese distiller's art. The Malt has the creamy caramel taste and slightly fruit follow of a highland malt, not afraid to be a bit sweet but showcasing the DNA that makes the Nikka Coffey whiskies something unique and truly special in the whisky world.
