Dark roast, rich, mocha, milky espresso
Tonight’s dram takes me (virtually) off the beaten path to the Riachi Winery & Distillery in Khenchara, Lebanon. I was surprised to learn that the distillery has been in-place since 1839. Being a huge fan of dark, thick stout and porter beers, I knew I had to try it when I read “This single malt release is made from roasted, imperial dark malted barley designed for high quality porter & stout beer.” It opens with espresso… dark roast, rich, mocha, milky espresso – wow! That is some opening! The bitters come next – freshly roasted coffee beans, bitter dark chocolate (like 86% cocoa), a little clove, and a lightly-burnt dark brown sugar, finally finishing as liquid tiramisu – literally, cookie dough and all. The creamy full-mouthfeel is like a latte, creamy and coating without being heavy. Everything about this dram is dark – it even has “dark” in its name. On a blind tasting, I would swear this is an Italian dram – the espresso and tiramisu are replicas of the flavors I enjoyed during my time in Italy. I don’t even drink coffee, but find this dram very enjoyable. A coffee lover will be drinking this for breakfast. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
