Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Barrel Proof Rye
Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Barrel Proof Rye pays homage to the legacy of Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr., who was a pioneer in rye whiskey production at the O.F.C. Distillery, now known as Buffalo Trace. This expression marks a significant milestone as the first barrel proof rye in the Taylor line, crafted with the high standards of the Bottled-in-Bond Act, which Taylor himself helped to establish. The whiskey boasts a robust 126 proof (63% ABV), allowing for a rich tasting experience that honors the tradition of quality distilling in Kentucky.
The nose of this barrel proof rye whiskey is complex and inviting, featuring a unique blend of aromas, including a surprising hint of dill pickle juice alongside notes of cocoa-dusted maraschino cherries. While the ethanol may assert itself initially, allowing the whiskey to settle for a few moments reveals the craftsmanship behind it, enhancing its smoother qualities. With each pour, the rich, thick texture becomes apparent, signaling that this is a spirit to be savored neat rather than over ice, which could dilute its impressive character.
On the palate, the whiskey showcases a delightful interplay of flavors. The rye's peppery notes emerge prominently, complemented by a nuttiness reminiscent of walnuts. While the floral and candied apricot elements may be elusive, the fruitiness, particularly cherry, stands out distinctly, prompting one taster to liken it to the flavor of a Luden's cough drop. Each sip delivers a finish that recalls cocoa, rounding out this complex yet balanced whiskey, making Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Barrel Proof Rye a standout choice for both enthusiasts and newcomers to the world of rye whiskey.
